Braden Looper threw a complete game 3-hit shutout Wednesday in what will hopefully be a rallying point for his up-and-down season. (I just conferred with the ESPN story on the game and they actually used the phrase 'up-and-down' to describe Looper's season. I kid you not. Maybe I'm pursuing the wrong dream... I need to start looking into an ESPN career rather than creating a crazy local website.)

Ankiel and LaRue homered in the 10-0 shellacking. It was Ankiel's second homer in two days which looks like a good indication to me that his injury is behind him.

In a separate story ESPN reports that, "Albert Pujols is expected to miss at least three weeks with a strained left calf, a major setback to a St. Louis Cardinals team already thinned by injuries."

The Cardinals also put Wainwright on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. I imagine that will be retroactive to Saturday because that was the day he injured it against Houston.

Despite all these injuries the Cardinals are sitting pretty with the 4th best record in all of baseball, yet you rarely hear anyone in the national media mention that little fact.

If you get a chance to visit the Weather page you will see a brand new setup.

I had been using The Weather Channel as the provider but I wasn't happy with the look or the usability of their interface. I've switched over to AccuWeather and I think you'll agree that it's a big improvement.

The box at the top left that says "St. Louis Forecast" and has an image of a person and a map background is actually a video weather update that you can watch right here from the site. I think that's pretty neat.

The bigger box has all sorts of goodies, including forecasts for the week, current temperatures, and current radar image.

I know it's not the most exciting or useful page in the world but I'm glad to be able to provide another Metro-East centered service here on the site.

If you have thoughts on what would make the page more useful or just want to say hello you can use the comment section below or email me from the Contact page.

Going 4.0 with a 2.19 ERA in May will win you the National League Pitcher of the Month award even if you were cut by the Kansas City Royals the year before and you pitched out of the bullpen for most of a season.

With those numbers you'll beat out perennially dominant throwers like Tim Hudson or Carlos Zambrano and rookie rock stars like Edinson Volquez.

Even if your name is Todd Wellemeyer and you honestly get excited about the free TV that comes with the award. (According to MLB.com: "A little more pumped about that," Wellemeyer joked when told about his new TV.)

This year Hudson is making $15.5 million and Zambrano $16 million (even the rookie Volquez is getting the league minimum $392,500) while Wellemeyer is making a cool $1 million.

That's the definition of value for your baseball dollar.

Consider that Wellemeyer is 6-1 on the year with a 3.16 ERA and 74 innings pitched and that value only increases. (Hudson, for example, is 7-4 with a 3.01 and 84 innings pitched.)

Asked about his success, Wellemeyer said that having the opportunity pitch in a rotation on a consistent basis is what has allowed him to get in a groove this season.

If he stays in a groove like this it's safe to say that he can expect a pay raise in the near future.

I thought I'd take a second to give an update on the site design. The design has been changing frequently but I think we've finally hit upon a setup that will work for a while.

I think the Classifieds and Auctions are looking good and they seem to be easy to navigate. Now we just need to add some more sections and get to the point where you can almost literally find anything for sale in the Metro-East at Metro-East.com.

I also hope to have some bloggers on board in the very near future so that section of the website should start to fill out nicely.

The events section obviously requires some work but I have a lead on a good solution for that so hopefully we can pull it together soon. The forum is also quite empty but that's to be expected with any new website.

I hope you like what's going on here so far. If you have any questions or feedback please, please, please let me know. That's the only way things are going to improve.

- Brian

The New York Times reports today that Charter Communications has started a business relationship with a company called NebuAd.

According to the deal, Charter will start recording the activity of their customers by logging every website that every customer visits and then they will sell this information to NebuAd. The information will be used by NebuAd to target advertisements to specific demographics. (This is very similar to the business model employed by News Corp's MySpace and Google's Gmail.)

The Times writes that:

Charter started sending letters out to several hundred thousand customers in four markets: Fort Worth, Tex.; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Oxford, Mass.; and Newtown, Conn. (The letters were first reported by DSLreports.com.)

Charter said it will start testing the system within 30 days and will make a decision whether to roll it out to its 2.8 million Internet customers a few months after that.

We should find out soon whether or not the St. Louis based Charter will be monitoring activity in the Metro-East where the majority of broadband internet connections are supplied by the company.

If reports are true and NebuAds is paying $2-3 per Charter customer for this information then it is probably only a matter of time before our websurfing habits start generating additional income for the communications conglomerate.

The full New York Times article can be found here.

The Belleville News Democrat has released the 2008 version of their annual guide Metro-east Living.

The guide contains 60 pages of information including history, local celebrities, census information, arts, entertainment, sports, and a considerable number of advertisements.

I expect that in addition to finding the guide online you will receive a copy with your newspaper if you have a subscription to the newspaper.
