“The Office” on NBC recently came to a close after a haphazard season due to the writer’s strike. “The Office” is a common interest in the Metro-East, maybe because Jenna Fischer aka “Pam” is from St. Louis or perhaps because of the fact that the characters resemble our own interesting coworkers. Whatever the reason, many of us can’t seem to get enough of Michael’s quirky ways and JAM (the infamous Pam and Jim relationship).

JAM is one of the subplots that drive “The Office” and is perhaps the most popular dynamic in the show. In the first season, “The Office” showcased the playful flirting between Jim and Pam while Pam was engaged to another guy, Roy (who actually worked at the office as well). In the second season, this flirtation intensified leading up to Jim’s speech at the end of the season where he admitted his love for Pam. The third season began with Jim working at another branch of Dunder-Mifflin and a budding relationship with another co-worker, Karen. He apparently left the Scranton branch after Pam turned him down, and we learn that Pam called off the wedding. Things get interesting when the branches merge and Jim comes back to Scranton (with Karen). This season ends with Pam and Jim planning a date. The fourth season (the most recent) begins with Jim and Pam dating, leading up to and preparing the viewers for an end-of-season proposal from Jim to Pam that never happens. The season ends with Pam disappointed that Jim did not propose while she is planning to go to art school for three months in New York.

First things first…where will the fifth season begin? Last season “The Office” opened on “real time” with the summer already past. Will they begin the season with Pam coming back from school? Or will we have to suffer through the dynamic of JAM being separated and how their relationship changes while she’s off in New York? Either way, the lack of a proposal by Jim and Pam’s reaction to this suggests that their happy ending won’t happen anytime soon… We will continue to be teased by the drawn out relationship now going on the fifth season.

But this season was very different in the fact that JAM were actually together. And I hate to say it but that coincides with this season probably being the worst yet. The jokes were mostly lukewarm, leaving the viewer disappointed and wanting more. The new dynamics that were introduced (Ryan as Michael’s new boss, Jan and Michael’s relationship, and Andy and Angela’s relationship) were not really funny. Of course there were moments of greatness, this we could not deny, such as the crazy dinner party Jan and Michael hosted. However, the season finale was the kiss of death for the season because it was chaos; Ryan is fired and jailed, Andy proposes to Angela, Angela is cheating with Dwight, Toby leaves Dunder-Mifflin, we meet his new replacement who Michael falls in love with, Pam is accepted to art school and Jan’s pregnant! If you felt overwhelmed, you weren’t alone. This jam-packed hour long season finale and the season itself may have been disappointing, but there is hope for next season. We might see some of the familiarity of “The Office” characters that we fell in love with in the beginning. Dwight and Angela may reunite, Michael is single, and of course, as usual, the status of JAM is questionable and keeps us on the edge of our seats.
